Shay

Write a one paragraph summary of the chapter.

Tally was escaping from the pretty mansion party, and was trapped in a bush. She thought the person outside of the bush was a warden but it was really just Shay. Shay was an ugly like Tally, who had friends that became pretty's. After getting to know each other they ride a hovel board thing to the other side of the river.

What have you learned about Shay? Is she like Tally? Make a prediction about what will happen between Tally and Shay.

I think that Tally and Shay will become best friends, and forget about their pretty friends.

Q. why do you think New Pretty Town advocates bungee jumping?

A. Because bungee jumping is sort of amazing and futuristic.

History of bungee jumping:

Bungee has quite an old origin. The idea of this way of jumping comes from the ancient ritual "Gkol" performed in the Pentecost Island in the Pacific Archipelago of Vanuatu. The legend says that in the village Bunlap a man called Tamalie had a quarrel with his wife and she ran away and climbed a Banyan tree where she wrapped her ankles with liana vines. When Tamalie came up to her, the woman jumped from the tree and so did her husband not knowing what had his wife done. So he died but the woman survived. The men of Bunlap were very impressed by this performance and they began to practise such jumps in case they got in similar situation. This practice transformed into a ritual for rich yam harvest and also for proving manhood.
Modern bungee jumping as we know it today actually started on the 1st of April ( Fools' Day ) 1979 when group of people from the Oxford University Dangerous Sport Club, impressed by a film about "vine jumpers", jumped from 245-Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England. Using nylon braided, rubber shock cord instead of vines, and dressed in their customary top hat and tails, they performed a four man simultaneous jump

Characterization- Tally- Ugly, nerdy, loosing her best friend.

Characterization-Peris- Pretty, popular, not a good friend.

What do you think about the friendship of Tally and Peris? Are they best friends? Why or why not?

I don't think they are best friends, because best friends don't ditch their best friend just to be a 'pretty.'

'new pretty time'

Find and quote ONE oxymoron from the chapter or ONE example of irony.

'Drum machine'

Q. Why do you think Tally chose to wear a mask to the party that was deemed "white tie."

A. So no one would recognize her.

Masks history:

a form of disguise. It is an object that is frequently worn over or in front of the face to hide the identity of a person and by its own features to establish another being. This essential characteristic of hiding and revealing personalities or moods is common to all masks. As cultural objects they have been used throughout the world in all periods since the Stone Age and have been as varied in appearance as in their use and symbolism.

How does this relate to Tally's decision?

Because she tries to hide her ugliness and to cover up her face.

Q.How would you define beauty? What would the world be like if everyone was "beautiful."

A. I think that beauty is not just looks, but personality too. I think if the world was beautiful inside and out, there would be less crime, or harsh judgment, but i also don't think people would get to express themselves.
